another project

I can't stand an empty design wall and my Bow-dasious blocks are done, ready to be set in rows, so I pulled out another UFO that I found while hunting for something else. Imagine that! I don't even remember the name of this block so I can't put it on the list for possible UFO's 2013. I do remember it was a Bonnie Hunter block that appeared in Quiltmaker magazine. See how you make it as both a positive and negative block. Then you put four blocks (two of each) together to make a block. I don't think that issue of the magazine even had a layout, but I do think she showed one in a latter blog, but this was a long time ago. Can anyone help me with the name of the pattern. Also I need help deciding out to lay them out.

This way has the blocks laid so that the dark corners are together and then the light corners are together. It gives it more of a boxy look I think, but I like it.

This layout has the four corners coming together in a true four patch. This layout gives it a more linear look and you get a totally different look with the lights. After I had the second one on the wall I thought I liked it the best but now looking at the pictures I'm not sure. Isn't is amazing how just a ninety degree turn of the block changed things so much. Tell me which one makes the cut.

I have nine block made and enough cut out for another 15.It is an 8 inch block so I will need a good many more for a bed size quilt. I would like to finish this before it even made it to a UFO challenge list but I have a lot to do over the next few months. First the Athens PieceMakers Quilt Guild show is Sept. 14,15 and 16. I still one rod pocket and several labels to finish before then. After that I have to complete some Christmas gifts. You do know that Christmas is less than four months away, which is still a good ways off unless you are making gifts, then it is not so long. I have done better this year, usually I don't think about making anything until Oct. or Nov. .

I can't think of any major drama going on this week and we grilled yesterday so enough cooked for two or three days so maybe I can get some serious sewing in this week. I wish for all of you a good sewing week as well.

DWM working ahead

I have finished the August UFO number (well except for binding) so I was looking at what was left on the list. I only have one that will need a good bit of piecing so I thought I would work on it. It is another Bonnie Hunter pattern. I have a little over half of the blocks pieced but I think I will make it a little larger.

The original pattern is 7 blocks by 7 blocks. Unless I am making a quilt king size I don't usually make square quilts, so I thougth I would add another row.

I had bow ties done in red, blue, yellow, orange, green, purple and brown. I bought a lot of turquoise and hot pink when I did Orca Bay so I thought I would add a little of these. I made a few just to make sure it was a pop not a stand out like  a sore thumb. I think they work.

I also pulled some of those new oranges I bought on the Kansas trip. I'll keep making these blocks while I finish putting labels and rod pockets on my quilt show entries.

I'll try to not go a week again before the next post. Happy quilting.

Monday 8-13-12

This is my August UFO, I got the borders on this weekend and hope to get with Barb about quilting it either Tues. or Wed. Just have to find something for a back.

I also got the center of Star Gazing together. Ready to add borders now, have got the outside pieced border cut. This pattern is from Bonnie Hunter's first book Scraps and Threadtails. I just got her newest book String Fling and let me tell you I really wanted to start on Jamestown Landing but I wouldn't let myself start another project until I finish a few. No commitment on how many I will finish before I start it but I will finish some. I think I will do it in green and cream instead of blue and cream.  Here is a closer look at my Star Gazing.

As I type this Johnny is working with Lucy on a leash so we can all walk together.
Have a good week!

The two thirds quilt

Many of you may recognize this pattern as Bonnie Hunters Oklahoma Backroads. It is an easy block and uses up a lot of 2 1/2  inch strip scraps. I had completed a little over 20 of these blocks and had the units complete and pinned together to take to retreat  last April. Needless to say I had carried way too many different projects to the retreat but I did think I could finish a few. So I got those pinned blocks out and just whipped them right out. I think there were 30 blocks so I set them together 5 x 6. The rows went together quickly. I had even carried a few different border options and after getting a consensus from the group, cut the inner and other border and quickly got them on the top. Wow one project finished. The next day I digging in my bag for another project and discover a stack of blocks. These were the Oklahoma Backroads blocks I had completed before the retreat. So I really only used two thirds of the intended number of blocks. Oh well I guess I have a good start on another one.

If I have told this story before please forgive me. I sent this top along with matching border fabric for binding to Jo Kramer at Jo's Country Junction with the hopes that she can find a good home for it.

Working on some Santa projects so no pictures it would spoil the surprise.

Now go sew!!!!

8-6 dwm

Not a lot on my design wall this morning. Saturday I thought I had all the units made to make 42 of these blocks. I pinned them together just to make sure I had a good variety and wouldn't end up with two of the same units in the last block. I had one unit left over so I thought I had better count to make sure I was right. Well I was 5 blocks short, so with the left over unit I still needed to make 19 more. I sure was glad I had not sewn those together. This way I could strip piece these last units and then go back and work them into the blocks without repetition. Got all that done yesterday and started working on the sashing strips. Keeping those mirror images straight is a little bit of a problem sometimes but so far it is working. Don't  know if I will get much sewing done today, have got to clean house but first I have to go walk. Have a good day everyone.

Brown bag gift

Last night was the meeting of the Athens PieceMakers Quilt Guild and we had the reveal of our brown bag challenge. Phyllis Ramby had drawn my challenge fabric and made me this cute little wall hanging. I immediately hung it in my sewing room this morning. So appropriate for a sewing room don't you think. My fabric was the blue in the border. I hope we do this challenge again next year.
