Another Monday

I can't believe how fast this month is going. Of course this last week was just a little zombie for me. I got a terrible head cold and didn't feel like doing much. Thank goodness Johnny is recovering the fingers in the lawn mower accident but now he has my cold. We were hoping with all the antibiotics he was taking he wouldn't get this cold, but no such luck.

I just wasn't in the mood to finish the string blocks in Fair and Square so I pulled out Holy Toledo that I cut some on while cutting Star Gazing. I really want to empty this tub of wovens I have  and these two quilts have really put a dent in it.

I got these 8 blocks done and have pieced HST's using Thangles until I ran out of Thangles. I need 12 more sheets to finish the last 72 of the 560 HST's needed. Hopefully this is something I can work on this week once I get caught up on household chores that didn't get done this past week.

A friend asked me to quilt this little Hoot Owl wall hanging. I couldn't figure how to turn the picture so you are looking at it sideways. oh well

Bed Turning

Each quilt show we have a bed turning with stories about each quilt. This year since it has been 150 years since the civil war all the shared quilts were made from civil war reproduction fabric. I thought I would share some of the pictures, of course I don't remember the names of the quilts or who contributed them.

This first one is Women's Voices, this one I know because it is one of my UFO's.

I believe this one was Butternut and Blue with an explanation of the butternut color being easier to obtain than the Confederate Gray.

I don't remember what pattern this was but it looks like something I might like to do so may need to get information again from Lou Ann.

This one is mine, the pattern in American Heritage, it was an 8 month pattern.

This pink and brown one had something to do with the start of the war in the Carolina's.

This one was called Wheatland, which I think was the name of the home of President Buchanan.

This was an example of the cot quilts women made for soldiers only this one has the added borders that allowed a quilt to go around bed post.

I am drawing a blank on this one except I think it represented both the North and the South.

This was Cindy Robinson's Elk River Cabins. A Judy Martin pattern. Log Cabins were very popular during this time frame.

Court House Steps which is a variation of a log cabin.

This is a half or quarter log cabin.

This is a pineapple log cabin. I want to do one of these some day.

This is a Dear Jane, no desire to try this one.

I think this is Dear Hannah, don't think I will go there either.

Snail's Trail.

Churn Dash, Monkey Wrench and Shoe Fly, don't  remember the exact name.

Totally in the dark on this one.

I think this was the Hospital Commission or commissary. It depicted the generals of both the North and South plus President Lincoln and other important people of that time.

Northern Generals on top and Southern Generals on bottom.

I think this was a 52 week block sampler.

Seems like this may have represented something about the begining of the war.

I am pretty sure these last two were made by Sue Manley.
As usual Lou Ann did a great job with the story telling.

DWM 9-17-12

Not a lot has changed on the design wall this week due to the quilt show. I did get all 30 of the checker board blocks complete. I also worked a little on the checker board border. Before I can get back to the string blocks I have to find a larger container to dump my string basket in so that I can sort through them. I may try to work on that a little today but may not because I am really tired after the show and oh yea a trip to the hospital with husband on Saturday. A little mishap with the lawn mower cost him the ends of two fingers and an over night stay in the hospital. I didn't plan to go back to help take down the quilts Sunday afternoon but when I got him home Sunday morning he insisted he was fine and for me to go back. One upside was it is his right hand and he is left handed.

My previous blog has some pictures from the quilt show and I will post more later but I thought I would share one of mine here.

This is Bonnie Hunter's Roll Roll Cotton Bole. This is my second color way. The first few steps were so simple I decided to make a second quilt in another color pallet and of course then I got to the step where you need 60 string pieced blocks so that is now 120. That is why I named this one "I Want Do That Again" .  Check back for more show pictures and check Patchworktimes.com to see what others are working on this week.

Quilt Show Day One

Today was the first day of the Athens Piecemakers Quilt Show. I thought I would share a few of the photos.
This is Cathy's Farm Fresh and the picture doesn't do it justice. Part of what you see is the quilt hanging behind it. That quilt's backing fabric is a little distracting in the photo. You don't really notice it in person.

This is Francene's entry in applique.
Georgia's applique entry is covered in yo-yo's. There is going to be a lot of competition in the applique division, this is only three, there are several more.

I don't think I have enough patience to make all those yo-yo's but who knows maybe someday.

This is my prediction for Best of Show.

This is a close up of the same quilt, much prettier. The strips were cut 7/8 inch so finished 3/8. I told her she is an over achiever. She has a quality that I wish would rub off on me, she works on one thing at a time and this took over a year. I don't think I have that long an attention span. It is a huge quilt.

This is one of mine, I don't think I've show it before. I named it Borrowed. Sue Manley had the top finished and showed it at guild one night and I went home and started it. I didn't have enough pinks and browns so I borrowed some from Donna. Since I borrowed both pattern and fabric that is what I named the quilt.

This is Ada's Paris in the Fall. I have the kit but that is one that is not even on my UFO list because it is all still in the package.

If you remember Phyllis made me a spool wall hanging for our brown bag challenge. This is her large version of a spool quilt. I asked her about her large stash of striped fabric. She says she has a lot.

Here's Linda's Winner's Circle. I helped her whip the binding down at our last stitch gathering.

This one also belongs to Cindy Robinson (little log cabin, best of show prediction). In this quilt she has parred 30's reproduction with a more tan that white background, very striking.

This is my Cheddar Kiss, I've shown it before but it looks so much better hanging in a show.

This is my Temptation Trail. These were the only two I planned to put in the show but we didn't get enough entries so I add Borrowed and "I Want Do That Again" . I will have to get a picture of it tomorrow  and  will tell you the story behind the name then.

These are the 3 miniatures I entered at the last minute. Left to right is, I Saw Red. Pixie Garden and My Needle Will Turn.
I will try to post more tomorrow for all followers that live too far away to come to the show.

DWM another UFO

I finished my Carolina Chain so I pulled out another unfinished project. This is Fair and Square another Bonnie Hunter pattern. It's in the book Leaders and Enders, which may be my favorite. I was working on this and the page kept turning over to the next pattern. It was something Trail, don't remember but I called mine Temptation Trail since it tempted me away from this one. I finished Temptation Trail 3-30-11 and I am entering it in the quilt show this weekend. Now 18 plus months later I am getting back to Fair and Square. I was a lot further along than I remembered so that is a good thing.
I now have 22 of the 30 checkerboard blocks complete with the other 8 needing just a bit of work.

The alternate blocks are string pieced and I have about half of the 60 needed. I don't think I will get much sewing done this week. This morning we are working in the garden getting ready for fall planting. Tomorrow a friend is having surgery and then Thursday we set up for the show so that will take care of the rest of the week.  If you are close to the north Alabama area try to make the quilt show, it is held at Athens College on Hobbs Street. We would love to see you.

DeAndra's Wedding Shower

Gina Decker gave DeAndra a wedding shower today at the Snack Shack in Florette, AL. DeAndra worked at the quilt shop and she was our little ray of sunshine. The attendees were those of us who worked there with her and family and close friends. The tables and decorations were beautiful and of course the food was wonderful.

In planning we decided on hand made items. I mean we did all work at the quilt shop.

First she opens some place mats made by Gina. That's Sarah trying to keep up with the who and what of it all.

An afghan from Donna, so sorry she couldn't be there today. Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Bonnie made her this apron.
Bonnie also made her this cake. She also made her something with their initials but no photo.

Linda made the big tote sitting in the floor. DeAndra can store lots in there, but today it was filled with all kinds of goodies. DeAndra was pulling everything out so fast I didn't get pictures of everything.

She got table runners for all seasons, dish cloths, place mats, pillows, towels and more.
She also got canned goods, casserole covers, cookbooks and more.

I pieced the quilt and Gina quilted it. The bright cheerful colors just fit DeAndra's personality.

Gina made a set of pillow cases. Cathy made the cutest fabric bowls plus some baked goods in a jar. No picture, just too much going on here today.
We divided into 3 teams and made veils. Bonnie is modeling team 3.

This is team 2 and I might add the winner.
Team 1 model is Sarah. They had a little trouble.
DeAndra and all 3 models.
This is the entire group. DeAndra with Mother and future Mother-n-law, Jared's sister and another friend plus the rest of the stitch group. Yes we count Bonnie and Sarah in the stitch group, they just don't get to attend as often. A wonderful time was had by all, thanks Gina for putting this together.
